This weekend the theme of Rol's always excellent Saturday Snapshots quiz was songs about poets. To complement that, here are some songs by poets.
That's all.
"Many Years Ago" - Mzwakhe Mbuli
"Unite Handsworth" - Benjamin Zepheniah
"It Dread Inna Inglan'" - Linton Kwesi Johnson
"North East West South" - The Last Poets
"Juju/ Alchemy Of The Blues" - Sarah Webster Fabio
"When I Die" - Nikki Giovanni
A great selection, Ernie.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I'm disappointed that despite what I'd interpreted as some heavy hints over My Top Ten, you've not offered up anything by Pam Ayres.
By way of compensation...

I did search for videos of Pam declaiming to a musical backing but couldn't find any. Maybe we can persuade some whizzkid producer to team up with her and make an album.
DeleteI would add to that list, but I've half-completed a Snapshots based on songs that were originally poems, It'll probably appear in 2026, but I don't want to give you an unfair advantage.
ReplyDeleteHere's a contender for you. I'll have forgotten all about it by 2026:

I've been listening to Fairport lately. Not that one though.
DeleteSuperb. And love the bonus Pam from Khayem.
ReplyDeleteLove these, LKJ being one of my favarite Dub poets. Though you would include some Oku Onuora, though, one of the greatest.
ReplyDeleteApologies for the omission. I will look into it.
DeleteI had a mate many years ago who protested that Pam Ayres' ditties, whilst "admittedly not exactly cutting edge" were actually worthy of reappraisal. I didn't listen then and I'm certainly not going to bother now - life's too short innit. Sorry Pam.
