Tsonga Disco: General Muzka

Let us return to the Tsonga Disco. Today we bring you a couple of tracks from General Muzka's 2007 album "Means Business: Kufa Ka Yin'wana". I would speculate that "Kufa Ka Yin'wana" means "Means Business" in Tsonga. And as you can see from the cover, he really does:

I know nothing about the General apart from his real name, which is Chris Mkhonto, but he is obviously well-connected. "Means Business" was mixed by our old friend Joe Shirimani, and this year he has made an album with the mighty Penny Penny which Joe produced - that is a treat that is still to come. In the meantime, wrap your lugholes around these two:

"Xitulu Xale Mahlweni" - General Muzka

"Dudula" - General Muzka

I can only think of two other musical Generals and, like Muzka, they are both pretty cool dudes - General Saint (of "Clint Eastwood and" fame) and General Johnson of the Chairmen Of The Board - and there are clips of both below. Perhaps calling yourself is sufficient to bestow coolness, in which case please call me General Goggins from now on.

The second clip is about as cool as it is possible to get - General J and Joey Ramone with a Carolina beach music version of "Rockaway Beach". If you ask nicely I might put the mp3 up as well.

  1. I, THEMBHANI OLLIES MALULEKE, CANA CALL GENERAL MUZKA AS THE BEST TSONGA ARTIST WHEN IT COMES TO DISCO MUSIC. GENERAL MUZKA SIMPLY MEANS GENERAL MUSIC. HE HAS RELEASED A VIBRANT ALBUM BY THE NAME OF "NEGOTIO" WHICH IS DOING FINE IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.

Good to hear from you. I only discovered Tsonga/ Shangaan disco about a year ago so am still learning. If you can suggest any other artists I should look out for, let me know. Thanks.

  3. The name 'General Muzika' is also borrowing a lot from Congolese (both Brazza and Kinshasa) trends where you get a lot of groups called '[some name] Musica'. for example, you have the likes of Wenge Musica, Extra Musica, College Musica, etc. And of course you have the legendary General Defao from Congo-Kinshasa. Have never listened to our Muzika's music (lol), but I am sure it has the same pulsating rhumba/sokouss/kwassa-kwassa/ndombolo beats of the central african region. interesting genre that, you need to listen to it!

  4. General Muzka is the new king of shangaan disco following in the foot steps of shangaan disco greats like the late Paul Maesela Ndhlovu, the late Peta Teanet and the now defunct Penny Penny. Your music rocks my brother, it carries very strong messages and one can also dance to it.

I'm absolutely sure that your collaboration with Papa Penny and and the master producer, Joe Shirimani will be as hot as ever. Can't wait to buy the album.

I'm writing this extract from the US, I listen to your music on the internet. God be with you so you can make more music.

  22. General Muzka is the best at what he is doing. He had a unique approach to disco music building on what has been established by late artist, Paul Ndlovu, and peterTeanet. I love General Muzka, the ryhthm of his beat is just amaizing...I can't single out any song because they all the best according to me. Advice Sinarito Valoi
