Os Três Gigantes

Later in the week we will arrive at the fourth destination in our musical tour of the Americas and it is a big one - Brazil. Trying to sort that post out has been a big challenge simply because I have so much Brazilian music - well over 500 tracks just on my shuffle with many more on CDs and the hard drive.

To help with the editing process I decided to take out three gents who are probably my favourite Brazilian artists, each of whom have featured on these pages many times over the years - the father of samba-rock, Jorge Ben, the king of samba-soul, Tim Maia, and the boss of them all Gilberto Gil.

But having done that I had second thoughts. The reason they are my favourites and keep turning up here is because they are all bloody marvellous. Who am I to deprive you of more of their magnificence?

This is the compromise. A track from each of the Big Three today to warm you up for the proper Brazil post on Friday. The selected tracks are new to the blog even though the gents themselves are not.

"Cérebro Eletrônico" - Gilberto Gil

"A Banda Do Zé Pretinho" - Jorge Ben

"Do Leme Ao Pontal" - Tim Maia

And now a video apiece. Contrary to the titles at the start of the Jorge Ben video the song is "Taj Mahal" and it definitely wasn't ripped off by Rod Stewart.

  1. It is a great idea. Posting 1 post per country. Tiny Guyana or Suriname on the same par as Brazil. It feels not right, but it is your way. And you can make exceptions whenever you please. I am just enjoying good music from you.
I have a lot of Suriname music, only hardly any post 2000 stuff.

    1. I haven't got round to researching Surinam yet but I suspect it might be challenging, so any suggestions or assistance would be gratefully received.

    2. I read that as Richard has 2000 songs from Surinam which is pretty impressive!

    4. Let me clear it up
In the year 2000. I have pre 2000 music mainly.
and for your info, I have about 200 albums, 150 7''s and loads of downloads. I will run throughthese downloads, for most of the post 2000 (that is the year 2000) stuff will be digital downloads.
When you want a few starters for exploring music from Surinam Ronald Snijders, Traffasi, Kid Dynamite, Cosmo Stars(& Exmo Stars, Master Blaster) Cocaine by Dillinger was redone as Kronto by Happy Boys, Fra Fra Sound, Groot Bazuin Orkest, William Souvenir

Would you be interested in writing the Surinam post in this series? You are clearly much better qualified to do so than I am, and it would be an education for me as well as my readers.

There have been guest posts in earlier series - for example a Danish harp player and a Portuguese goat farmer covered those countries when we toured Europe - and it might be nice to revive the tradition.

Let me know if it would be of interest. There is no rush, Surinam will be post 20 out of 23 and I have only just done post 4, so we are probably 5 - 6 months away at the current rate.
