Poetry Corner

A bit of culture to round off the week courtesy of The Last Poets.

"Holy Terror" came out in 1995 and featured two of the three original poets, Umar Bin Hassan and Abiodun Oyewole. It is one of their funkier albums which may be explained by the nifty band they put together - Bootsy Collins, George Clinton, Bernie Worrall, Bill Laswell, Aiyb Dieng and Grandmaster Melle Mel. It would be hard not to be funky with that lot behind you.

The Last Poets are the last post on here for a short while as I'm off on a work trip on Sunday, getting back towards the end of next week. Behave yourselves while I'm away.

"Funk" - The Last Poets

"Black And Strong (Homesick)" - The Last Poets

Other socially aware poets are also available.

  1. The Last Poets have the dubious distinction of having something in common with Gene Loves Jezebel, UB40 and Bucks Fizz. That is, two versions operating under essentially the same same. Although your reference to The Last Ports in the opening paragraph had me thinking a third splinter had emerged.

Being the Johnny come lately that I am, I’d heard the artists who were inspired by the artists who were inspired by The Last Poets, before I actually heard them. I wish I’d found them sooner.

A great post to sign off with, Ernie. Have a great trip and look forward to your return, if The Official Secrets Acts permits you to talk about it.

    1. Oops! I will secretly correct the first paragraph so that future readers think you are the one who is confused not me.

I think you may be on to something with list. Maybe there is a mutant version of Rol's Namesakes series to be done.

There are plenty of other examples. As JM will vouch there were two versions of Sweet for many years, one of whom I saw in Rostov-in-Don in Russia.

Way back in the 1980s I saw one of the approximately 27 versions of The Drifters then touring at the "authentic medieval show" in Tenerife (disappointingly not dressed in authentic medieval costumes).

  3. I used to know someone who swore that Pam Ayres' poetry actually transcended the popular expectation of her. I swore too - but not in a positive way

    1. George needs to look to his laurels. Compared to your acquaintance he can hardly be described as contrarian at all.
