Neglected Sailors

Last night I sat down to prepare this post only to find that my mind was completely blank. So I decided to take a look at at my listening stats on Last.fm in the hope of finding some inspiration.

I'm not sure I did, but I did find something. And that was that of the 100 artists that I have apparently listened to the most since Last.fm started collecting the data, there are only two that have never featured on the blog.

I'm putting that right today. Not just that, we've got a little mini-theme out of it too.

"Sailin' Shoes" - Little Feat

"Sail On, Sailor" - The Beach Boys

Here are some more sailors who have never been seen in these waters before...

And one who I'm pretty sure must have been.

  1. I'm presuming that the first of your video sailors is Girls Girls Girls by Sailor... I have to guess, because it's been blocked by my workplace administrator who doesn't want a man in my position listening to such filth.

Has Jimmy Buffet ever featured? If not...

    1. 'A Glass of Champagne', which I would argue is less obviously filthy than 'Girls, Girls, Girls'.

Will need to check on Jimmy but I think he has been seen round here.

  2. Glass of Champagne is a very very fine pop song. Unlike Dancing With The Captain which is a right load of old bobbins

    1. Sometimes I think you court controversy just for the sake of it.

  3. Thanks to you, three cats here have had to put with my warbling about champagne and glasses and other snatches of the lyric

  4. That Beach Boys song hits the spot in a way I didn't expect it to tonight

  5. It's the way he sings that word 'champagne' in the Sailor song that always gets me. In a good way.
I used to work with lots of sailors; ooh, the tales they could tell.

    1. Best not to repeat then here or Rol's workplace administrator will have him up in front of HR first thing Monday morning.

  6. I've always been a Girls Girls Girls man myself. Just checked out Sailor's main songwriter, Georg Kajanus on Wiki - his entry looks almost like it's been hacked as he's impossibly cosmopolitan with Norwegian/Russian/French-Finnish heritage with references to Mexico and Canada thrown in too. This maybe explains why he pronounces champagne the way he does! Now look what you've done - I never expected to expend so much energy on Sailor the 1970's 2 hit wonder pop group!

  7. My ABC selection on Friday featured a ‘sailor’ song. Whilst you were distracted by my terrible punning, Ernie, other subliminal messages were clearly at work.

Paul Nicholas’ other memorable moment for me was an exchange from TV show Just Good Friends which was de rigeur family viewing in the 80s. Something along the lines of,

    “I work as an accountant”
    “Oh yes, what kind?”
    “Turf”

  8. A great post, EG. Apropos of which I feel compelled to listen to Son of a Son of a Sailor by Jimmy Buffet. Life's funny like that isn't it?
